The Radiant One wins Speight's Timaru Stakes
January 29, 2024
Post Race Presentation
  • The second day of the Summer Season took place on ideal going under very warm and windy conditions. Going at Good4 was upgraded to Good3 following race 6.

  • The famous yellow, green, black, and pink colours of Southland’s Dennis Brothers were carried to victory in the days feature the Speight’s Timaru Stakes. Aided by the addition of blinkers after a disappointing race at Gore the previous week THE RADIANT ONE, in the hands of Tina Comignaghi, took the lead at the top of the straight and was too good for MISS LAYLA and LORD DARCI. She gained her first Listed Stakes win recording a slick 1-22.00 in the process.

  • A field of promising stayers was assembled for the Woodbourne Tavern & Motels Bottle-O Renwick Marlborough Cup. Local gallopers SIR ALBERT and JON OL ROCCO had trekked to Trentham for the $350,000 Remutaka Classic the previous week. Neither showed any ill effects of the trip as they fought out the finish with SIR ALBERT prevailing by a head. Joe Kamaruddin rode the winner for Terri Rae.

  • Rae had prepared the winner of the previous race CHAPINTEEL to win the D Reynolds Electrical Rating 65. This was a timely sponsorship as team Reynolds had installed the Polytrack lighting system which was in operation for the first time for trackwork earlier in the morning. CHAPINTEEL is part owned by Canterbury Jockey Club Life Member and Christchurch Casino principal owner Barry Thomas.

  • ANGEL WINGS brought up win number 100 for the season for Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson in the third event which was delayed after a false start in the second race on the card. That event having been won impressively by the Briand and Shane Anderton trained MADAM DUBAI to give Kamaruddin the first of his three winners on the day.

  • Terri Rae led the trainers on the programme also training three winners.
