Kylie Williams celebrates 1000 wins with family
- Canterbury jockey Kylie Williams recorded win number 1000 in a marvellous career aboard RIVIERA REBEL in the Waimakariri Businesses North Canterbury Cup. In doing so she joined a select group of four other female jockeys to do so. Celebrations, however, were muted as in behind her front running effort there was a five-horse fall with three riders being taken to hospital. Fortunately, all were discharged early on Sunday morning. All five horses were reported to not be suffering any serious injury.
- The drama resulted in the final two races being abandoned.
- Earlier in the day local three-year-old ALOTTAGO continued an Al Basti Equiworld Dubai NZ 2000 Guineas path with a convincing win in the Rangiora New World Guineas Trial. Part owned by Canterbury Jockey Club Board member Nigel Johnston the gelding is trained by Lance Robinson and was ridden by the underrated Corey Campbell.
- Another local three-year-old MISS ZIGGY shed her maiden tag in the opening maiden and in the next race, also a 1400 maiden, ORIGIN OF LOVE won at her second start. MISS ZIGGY is trained by Andrew Carston and ORIGIN OF LOVE out of the Riccarton Park stable of Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson. Both are heading to the Barneswood Farm NZ 1000 Guineas.
- A seven-horse field in the first two-year-old race of the South Island season was reduced to five runners after scratchings. Te Akau prepared the $1.50 favourite OUT OF THE BLUE and she duly obliged under Jasmine Fawcett..
