Spring Racing Day 2 - 17 September Review
One Kiss wins Canterbury Belle
September 19, 2022
  • Te Akau Racing dominated the programme but not with customary short-priced favourites.  NAVALHA (Opie Bosson) won the Rating 65 1200 metres event as $3.40 favourite but in the next race the Open sprint SUMMER MONSOON (Joe Kamaruddin) at $35/1 upstaged stablemate and even money favourite BURGUNDY ROSE.

  • The days feature was the New Zealand Bloodstock Canterbury Belle Stakes with most punters expecting the locally trained MISS TAKE to score a hometown victory.  Te Akau three-year-old ONE KISS was 2nd favourite the night before paying in the mid-$4 range.  Whilst scoring a dominate win the divided declared, which was in excess of $11, had many racing fans scratching their heads.  The filly had been scratched from a maiden race on Wednesday after having had one start for an unlucky seventh at Taupo and was ridden by champion jockey Opie Bosson.

  • Lance Robinson flew the local trainers flag winning two races. BURNVUE with Lee Callaway aboard won the Martin Collins New Zealand Cup Trial and AVAQUINELLA the last race the Racecourse Hotel Rating 75.  In doing so AVAQUINELLA gave last seasons top southern rider Tina Comignaghi her first winner back after a three-month trip home to Argentina.

  • EL TIRADOR won the Elmwood Trading Company Rating 65 after trainers John and Karen Parsons decided to back the five-year-old up after running second on the Polytrack on Wednesday.
