Mid Winter Christmas Races Review
Frankie the Fox wins Greenwood Amberley Cup
June 27, 2022
  • The Mid Winter Christmas raceday went ahead in very pleasant weather conditions on a track described as Heavy9 under the new descriptions (Slow9 Under the old).
  • Rohan Mudhoo had combined with his employer, Mike McCann’s (image) FRANKIE THE FOX at the Grand National Festival of 2018 to ride his first ever winner at FRANKIE’s first start.  Four years and 41 starts later the trio again came together to win the Greenwood Amberley Cup to record FRANKIE’s sixth career win all with Rohan aboard.
  • Hot favourite CHILLY FILLY was expected to win the open sprint the Smiths Hire but punters were left disappointed. The interestingly named three-year-old filly EMANON (Noname spelt backwards) carried only 51kg to beat the good mare CHOKITO and BENAUD.
  • Timaru trainer Bruce Tapper makes a habit of winning race at odds and did so once again in the Grand Sslam Trading Company for the two-year-olds. At 26/1 the first starter upset the favourite SECRETEXPRESS in the hands of Rahul Beeharry.
  • Lyn Prendergast was the only trainer or rider to win more than one race on the day.  She bookended the meeting winning the first race with MISS TAV and the last of nine with RED RUFUS.  The later was in sensational circumstances when the judge initially called HEY MICKEY as the winner after misreading the photo-finish that was taken from the inside camera.  Fortunately, the error was determined prior to placings being confirmed.  The margin was about as small as can be officially a nose at 1/3000th of a second.
