Promotion for Three Year Old Feature

An upgrade to Group rating sits nicely alongside a change in name for the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Canterbury Stakes.

Known in recent years as the ZACINTO STAKES the race to be run this year on Saturday 26 October will carry the name of the stallion that replaced ZACINTO at sponsor Inglewood Stud and will be known as the WAR DECREE STAKES (pictured).

At the same time the race will carry an upgrade from Listed to Group 3 status a decision that was made at the most recent meeting of the New Zealand Pattern Committee.

Sitting two weeks before the New Zealand Cup Meeting at Riccarton Park the WAR DECREE STAKES provides a most suitable lead-up over the 1600 metres distance to the two Classics the Al Basti Equiworld NZ 2000 Guineas and the gavelhouse.com NZ 1000 Guineas.

The success of the race in attracting quality ‘Guineas contenders’ is reflected in this upgrade to Group 3.

With the assistance of the sponsor the WAR DECREE STAKES will carry a stake of $80,000 an increase of $10,000 on the industry funded level of $70,000.

Inglewood Stud Manger Gus Wigley said “The two Guineas races at Riccarton Park continue to grow in stature and prestige, and this has been emphasised by the key lead up race now upgraded to Group 3. War Decree has been a big boost to the stallion ranks in the South and we're thrilled to be sponsoring such an important race on the New Zealand racing calendar".
