Stake increase to $60,000

The KAM Transport sponsored Marlborough Cup will be run on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club Summer Racing Season, Saturday 29 January 2022.

The $40,000 feature race day stake for an open handicap race has been boosted by sponsorship from KAM Transport, the Marlborough Racing Club and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing special interest funding to enable a stake of $60,000 for the 2000 metres contest.

Marlborough Racing Club President John O’Brien said, “Whilst remaining disappointed that we no longer have a racemeeting, we are a racing club committed to our sport and pleased to promote our time-honoured feature race, together with our sponsor KAM Transport, at the home of southern racing, Riccarton Park.”

KAM Transport is a Wellington and Picton based transportation company with a strong racing connection through the Preston family long-time stalwarts of the Wellington Racing Club and Marlborough Racing Club.

In keeping with the country cup’s theme and Marlborough’s location in the northern half of the South Island the winners of the following races will be exempt from the ballot in the KAM Transport Marlborough Cup:

  • Greymouth Jockey Club, Greymouth Cup, Open Handicap Race 2000metres, Monday, 3 January 2022.
  • Greymouth Jockey Club, Miss Scenicland Stakes, WFA F&M 1500metres, Monday 3 January 2022.
  • Reefton Jockey Club, Benchmark Rating 74 Handicap 2000metres, Wednesday 5 January 2022.
  • Kumara Racing Club, Kumara Gold Nuggets, Open Handicap Race 1810metres, Saturday 8 January 2022.
  • Canterbury Jockey Club, Benchmark Rating 74 Handicap 2000metres, Thursday 20 January 2022.
