Grand National Festival - Day 2 Review
Myers wins fifth Hurdles
August 11, 2022
  • Kevin ‘Dummy’ Myers dominated the Days feature Hospitality NZ Canterbury 132nd Grand National Hurdles in every aspect.  He lined up five of the seven runners, prepared the quinella and went into the record books as the winningest trainer in history with HAPPY STAR giving him his fifth win in the race.  Champion jumps jockey of 2012/21 Shaun Phelan took the mount beating HAPPY STAR and the Dean Cunningham trained PHELAN FOXY.

  • The Grand National Hurdles was the only race run on the turf with the eight flat races being run, for the first time, on the Polytrack.

  • The loudest cheer on the day was reserved for the Grand National Amateur Championship, a race that has become a real highlight of this middle day of the festival.  Sponsored by a wonderful supporter of racing at Riccarton Park, Brian Noonan and his business Nautical Insurance the race for the Amateur riders was run over 200 metres and proved to be a thrilling contest.  Lisa Kennedy took the honours aboard EKSTREMEMISS and the mare’s 90-year-old trainer Leonard Stewart, a real gentleman.

  • Lisa Allpress rode two winners including the last race aboard MEGALOMANIAC for CJC Board Member Jeff McCall and his wife Tanya, the Pussy Galore Syndicate and the gelding’s trainer Andrew Carston.

  • Local stables won six of the nine races with the only northern win being in the Grand National Hurdles.
