Savaglee and connections post race
  • Punters anticipated that the $650,000 Al Basti Equiworld Dubai NZ 2000 Guineas would go the way of SAVALGLEE to the tune of a $1.70 tote starting price. They were not disappointed. The Savabeel colt was too good in a slick time of 1-33.86. Canterbury born and bred Pam Gerard travelled the Oaks Stud owned colt south for the Group 1 victory. Filly LOVE POEM gained valuable Group 1 form running second ahead of DOMAIN ACE and KIWI SKYHAWK.

  • The Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson trained MEHZEBEEN won the Nautical Boat Insurance Metropolitan Trophy, the lead up to the Martin Collins New Zealand Cup. She moved into second favouritism for the Cup behind BEAVERTOWN BOY who ran second whilst a previous Cup winner ALJAY finished third.

  • Both SAVAGLEE and MEHZEBEEN where ridden by Sam Spratt who made a clean sweep of the first day features winning aboard ILLICIT DREAMS for Kenny Rae in the Donaldson Brown Pegasus Stakes for the sprinters. She also rode a fourth winner on the programme aboard MAZZUCATO in the seventh.

  • DJ Hot Dub Time Machine played for an hour and half after the last so a horse named THE ENTERTAINER was the omen bet in that race. The Bill Thurlow trained mare gave Craig Grylls his second winner of the day for owners Grant, Bills brother and his wife Paddy Thurlow.
