Pelling Appointed Starter

Respected horseman takes role

The Ashburton Racing Club, Canterbury Jockey Club and South Canterbury Racing Club are pleased to announce the appointment of Barry Pelling as Starter for the racemeetings and trials to be conducted at Ashburton and Riccarton Park Racecourses and Phar Lap Raceway.
He takes the role from the outgoing Kevin Leigh-Ogden, the most recent in a line of accomplished Canterbury Starters, who the local racing community extend their best wishes for the future.
Pelling has history steeped in racing and the thoroughbred racehorse. A son of successful Riccarton trainer Dick Pelling, Barry rode successfully as an apprentice and as a jockey on the flat, over hurdles and in steeplechases.
He served on the starting gate crew under respected starter Ray Burgess and worked for many years in the horse float business.
Barry will work alongside the starting crew at the Riccarton Park trials on Tuesday and at the Ashburton races on Thursday 16 December before taking control of the starters button at Phar Lap Raceway on Tuesday 28 December 2021.
